Autodesk Tutorial

Thanks to Chris Cheung over at Autodesk for arranging all this.
Some of you will have seen most of the samples,
but the tutorial and downloadable brush set are new and
so is my voice (apologies...)

Live Storyboarding

Old piece, created 'live' while the Art Director and
Game Director talked through the level.
Equaly scary and fun.
And rough.

Promo Pitch Piece

Some recent-ish concepts for a TV promo piece.
Done with the good folks at Future Deluxe.

More here:

Process

Here's the before and after on the previous concept piece.

And here's some of the assets:
Ttattoos drawn in Sketchbook Pro,
the textures are my own photos, and the logo was
created in Adobe Illustrator.
The tattoos are of course a rip-off of Sailor Jerry's work.
Any similarities are intentional.

Concept Art

Here's an example of my current rendered work.
This is a personal piece to show off the technique
as most other examples will be tied up in NDA for many a year.
So something to show you guys and a portfolio piece too.
Sketchbook Pro for the underpainting and tattoos,
Photoshop for the matte overlays.

I'll post up the sbpro vs ps comparisons next week.

Then I'd better do a front view.

Canned

These guys were for the same project.
The credit for the cat in the baby carrier goes to the AD.
And pretty much everything else.
Pitch work for a soft drinks ad.

Turns out it's the guy on our right who's the Democrat.
Who'd have thought?

Sketchpage

While I never intend these to be a single illustration as such I like them to flow.
This one is somewhat disjointed I think, possibly as it was done at higher res?

Sketchpage Inking Capture

This starts off real-time (though I think
the capture feels laggy) and kicks up
the playback when the audio starts.
Might be a bit drowsy otherwise.

and the actual working size:

Sketchpage Capture

okay, so in keeping with the foul language of late,
here's a capture of a motherfucking boat.

Sketchbook pro. Brush 02/New ink Brush
I will 'ink' over this sketch at some point.

The boat and bird are referenced.
Sorry it's not some crazy animal shaped -or spurting- body part,
but all the images on that page are from my own
reference, so it tends to be fairly 'normal'. At the moment.

Also, this is at 4x speed, so roughly a 20 minute sketch.

IDLM

This was intended to be a fully rendered/matte
piece for the portfolio. But fuck it, it's Monday.

I ♥ Prometheus

Loved those Engineers.
Role on the sequel please!

Anyway, this started out as a character study for the Welcome to Planet Fuck guys.
Who'd have thought they're luck could have got any worse!

Yeah, you know and I know his Spanish is bad, but does he?

New Dimensions

One of the most exciting things to happen this year
will be the collaborations between myself and Michael Fichtenmayer at IndustriaMechanika
These scale model kits will feature some of my mech and vehicle works of late,
but randomly it starts with a character I designed over seven years ago,
back when everything was on paper.
He was called Freaky Gothic, and he was some sort of alien trapped sometime in the 1800's.
Anyway, here's the original (2005) and the recent model sheets I created.

He'll form part of one of Michael's kits and will be modeled by
David Richardson. There's a possibility of a standalone 12" version though!
I will keep you posted on this and the other future model kits.

Workshop Lite

Some more of the workshop, heavily edited and at ultra high speed.
What that does show is how much I zoom in and out.
In, and Out.
For me, zooming out is the only way to keep a check on things,
yet I need to zoom in for the clarity. Possibly a characteristic of the cintiq?
Anyway, Photoshop is mainly adjustment layers and gradients.
Oh yeah, and Illustrator for all the logos.

I think this horse is now flogged.

Flexing muscles

These are for a sketch page but are warm-ups
for todays work also. About an hours work.
I'll tidy these up later for the final sketch page.
These were all drawn in position which
is how I do most elements on a sketch page.
The link is to the actual working size image,
I'm using a 2200x2200 canvas in Sketchbook Pro.

The gap on the bottom left will no doubt
be filled with some poor tormented individual,
bodily fluids or cock nipples etc.

Animal Magic

Very rough, roughs of some animal studies.
I would normally neaten these up a little,
but I got what I needed at this stage.

and some sneaky peeks:

Friday 4 May 2012

Friday Nite Film

Here's a section of the workshop capture.

Probably 20-40 minutes in real time I guess.
If this were to be finished to my current work standard
I'd spend another day/eight hours on it.
As it is, here's a 5 minute fix-it.

Thursday 26 April 2012

Sketch Page

how many of these to fill a book? 40, 50?
Plenty to get on with then....

ImagineFX 82 Workshop

I've a workshop in the latest issue of ImagineFX.

It's a walkthrough on how I did a particular image in Sketchbook Pro.
There's a capture on the disc and the brushes I used and some texture stuff too.

I hate doing captures, I always get stage-fright and fuck things up.
Anyway, there's a feature with Adam Hughes so get it for that alone!

These are the other ideas I had, but we went with the mech.
I like the guy having a coffee personally,
but then I'm always one to focus on the undramatic.

Sketchbook Pro Brush Settings

Some of you have asked what brushes I use.
Here are my brush settings for Sketchbook Pro.
I have fairly extreme pressure settings as
I'm pretty lazy and don't like swapping between different size brushes,
I let pressure handle the change.
I should mention I have a corresponding eraser
for each of these listed below:
when I use a certain brush, I always use the equivalent eraser.

Old pencil/ink brush:

New pencil/ink brush:

Triangle ink brush:

Watercolour/Paint brush:

I've tried recreating these in PS and Painter but with no real satisfactory results.
As I use PS for 'post' work, levels etc, I use standard preset brushes.

Hope that's of some use!

Friday 9 March 2012

Ranger Bob WIP

I thought I'd get this done this week, but too busy elsewhere ;)
I've been doing a good deal of painting for clients which has been great,
but I've also employed photo texture overlay work in these to give them real bite.
Here, I'm just kicking back and relying on pure paint-work,
and a shit load of adjustment layers as usual.
I'll post all the stages once done, but really it's a case of
filling the page with a brush...

I hope to finish the Bomb Doctor strip (or at least re-do and finish) one day,
but for now it's an umbrella project just to get some personal pieces done.

Friday 2 March 2012

Bomb Doctor lunchtime sketch

Quick lunchtime sketch (over an old rough)
Using my triangle brush which I love and hate equally.
I've included the settings,
you'll need to creat a triangle and sample it first.
WARNING: may be addictive, will probably crash .

(the link is the actual size of the working image, too damn small)

Should have been painting it.... maybe I will...

ImagineFX Sketchbook Feature

Many thanks to ImagineFX
for featuring my work in the latest issue's (#80)
sketchbook section.
